Tokyo Electric Power Company has released video footage taken in the containment vessel of one of the Fukushima plant's damaged reactors whose level of cooling water was found to be far lower than expected.The footage released on Tuesday shows an endoscope reaching the water surface after being lowered about 6 meters along the interior wall of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant's No. 2 reactor vessel.The utility checked the water level by inserting the endoscope into the reactor on Monday. The depth of the water had been thought to be about 3 meters, but was found to be 60 centimeters.The water is not as murky as feared, and contains whitish floating matter thought to be peeled paint and rust, not melted nuclear fuel.But the firm could not pinpoint areas of damage in the vessel.The utility also detected extremely high radiation of 72,900 millisieverts per hour in the first direct monitoring inside the vessel since last year's accident.The high radiation and low water level are a setback for efforts to scrap the reactor.The utility has no plans for endoscope surveys at the plant's No. 1 and 3 reactors, due to high radiation levels.

La Compagnie d'électricité de Tokyo entamera ce lundi deux journées de contrôles endoscopiques de l'intérieur d'un réacteur endommagé de la centrale Fukushima Dai-ichi.

Lors d'une opération similaire effectuée en janvier, Tepco a obtenu des images de certains pans de murs et de tuyaux situés dans une enceinte de confinement du réacteur numéro 2 de la centrale.

L'opérateur n'a toutefois pas réussi à évaluer l'état de l'eau contaminée dans la partie inférieure de l'enceinte en raison de la longueur insuffisante d'un câble en fibre optique.

Cette fois, un câble suffisamment long sera utilisé pour effectuer des contrôles à la surface de l'eau contaminée et pour en mesurer la température, au niveau du réacteur numéro 2.
