wastewater may be leaking from a storage tank into the Pacific Ocean
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant says highly-radioactive wastewater may be leaking from a storage tank into the Pacific Ocean.Tokyo Electric Power Company has been investigating the leakage of more than 300 tons of contaminated water from one of its wastewater tanks. The leak was confirmed on Monday.Hundreds of tanks have been set up on a hillside near the reactors buildings. The water seeped out of a barrier set up around the tanks.TEPCO workers found contaminated water running toward a ditch about 50 meters from the leaking tank. Inside the ditch, they detected high levels of radiation measuring 6 millisieverts an hour. The ditch runs into the ocean south of the plant's port. The officials' latest explanation contradicted their previous announcement on Tuesday. At the time, they said they did not think the contaminated water was reaching the ocean because the level of radioactive substances in the seawater was not as high. But the operator still says it has not seen any change in levels of radioactive materials in the ocean due to the wastewater leak.
