Si le puissant courant passant près des côtes japonaises, le Kuroshio, parvient à diluer ces particules radioactives au bout de quatre mois, il n'en reste pas moins aux remous de l'océan de poursuivre le processus, qui reste lent. Et voilà, cette radioactivité a finalement réussi à traverser le Pacifique et il ne faudra pas attendre longtemps avant d'en repérer les traces sur les côtes américaines.
Les chercheurs précisent que ces dernières ne seront pas touchées de façon identique. Ainsi, les côtes de l'Oregon et de l'État de Washington feront face à une radioactivité plus intense mais sur une période brève, tandis qu'en Californie, l'exposition sera plus faible mais aussi plus longue.
"Cependant, les habitants de ces régions ne doivent pas se sentir menacés. La concentration de matières radioactives diminue rapidement en dessous des seuils d'innocuité de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé", assure Erik Van Sebille, auteur de l'étude publiée dans Deep Sea Research et chercheur au Centre d'excellence pour les sciences du climat de l'université de Nouvelle Galle du Sud (Australie).
D'après l'étude, la majorité de la radioactivité devrait toutefois rester confinée dans le Pacifique Nord. Il est à noter que ces calculs n'ont pris en compte que la radioactivité relâchée au moment de la catastrophe et non les fuites qui perdurent sur le site.

You could even consider it to be a monsoon country, and when we add that to the fact that we are a very mountainous nation, that means you have a lot of water always running underground to the ocean.
When you look at the Fukushima power plant, you see that nearby is a very big mountain range called the Abukuma mountain range, and mountain ranges are always as I said a source of water. And there’s just a tremendous amount of groundwater always, always flowing very strongly towards the ocean. […]
Given the fact that the special terrain of Fukushima encourages groundwater — I know that at present the people in charge of the Fukushima plant are saying that they will somehow stop the groundwater from getting into the premises of the plant — but I think it’s an extremely difficult task. I frankly think it is an impossible task, and I think anyone who thinks that they can accomplish such things and conquer nature in that way is simply just full of themselves and not really realistic
I am again very concerned about the groundwater, in part because as a result of the meltdown we have this spent fuel that is just being abandoned, just been left there, and as long as it exists it is constantly emitting radiation, it is constantly being in contact with water and you’re always going to get more and more contaminated water produced. So unless that spent fuel is a somehow taken care of, you’re always going to have this danger of more contaminated water getting out. […]
I believe that this groundwater is a tremendous problem, and the idea of this contaminated water reaching the ocean I think is very, very serious and frightening thing.

Google offers images around Fukushima Daiichi
The Internet giant's street view service has been offering photos of areas in northeastern Japan that were devastated by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
The images released on Wednesday were taken from April until last month in areas including the towns of Futaba and Okuma near the plant.
The photos show debris scattered all around, and areas in need of reconstruction nearly 30 months since the disaster.
Residency in most of both towns is restricted indefinitely. Town officials gave Google permission to take the photos.
Images of coastal areas in Miyagi and Iwate prefectures were also added.
Viewers now can see images of the areas from before and right after the disaster as well as those taken recently.

Explanation regarding the high radiation levels (maximum 1,800 mSv/h) found at tanks in Fukushima Daiichi NPS on August 31, 2013
We deeply apologize for the great anxiety and inconvenience caused by the recent contaminated water issues at the Fukushima Daiichi NPS, which affect residents near the power station and the broader society.
With regard to the high radiation levels (maximum 1,800 mSv/h) found at tanks in Fukushima Daiichi NPS on August 31, some articles reported that "by simple calculation, if a person were exposed to this amount of radiation for four hours continuously, it would lead to death," or "it would take only one minute to reach the annual radiation exposure limit for workers," etc. We would like to explain more about the figure of 1,800 mSv/h.
We used measuring equipment that measures both beta radiation and gamma radiation. The 1,800 mSv/h figure represents the total amount of beta radiation and gamma radiation. Most of the 1,800 mSv/h was beta radiation; gamma radiation measured 1 mSv/h.
Since 1,800 mSv/h is approximately 3.5 times higher than the control level of the equivalent dose for skin, which is 500 mSv/year, such radiation exposure should be carefully controlled. However, since beta radiation travels only a short distance, radiation levels can be reduced considerably by maintaining a distance. Moreover, since beta radiation is weak and can be blocked by a thin sheet of metal, such as aluminum, we believe that we can control radiation exposure by the using proper equipment and clothing.
Additionally, although 1,800 mSv/h was detected at 5cm above the floor, the radiation level at 50cm above the floor was 15 mSv/h. Thus, the figure of 1,800 mSv/h does not represent the radiation level of the whole area.
Some articles reported that "if a person were exposed to this amount of radiation for four hours continuously, it would lead to death," by comparing with the radiation level that would result in death (7,000 mSv), or "it would take only one minute to reach the annual radiation exposure limit for workers," by comparing with the annual radiation exposure limit for workers (50 mSv). However, we believe that simply comparing the 1,800 mSv/h figure with these standard levels is inappropriate, since the standard levels represent the cumulative effective dose (not equivalent dose) upon the whole body.
We will investigate the cause of this issue, taking any appropriate countermeasures immediately, and continue to make every effort to secure the safety of workers.

Fishermen lodge protest with TEPCO on water leak
The chief of the national federation of fisheries cooperatives, Hiroshi Kishi, on Thursday summoned TEPCO President Naomi Hirose to his office.
TEPCO officials acknowledged earlier in August that several hundred tons of highly radioactive water had leaked from a storage tank at the Fukushima plant. They also said some of it may have seeped into the sea. They admitted in July that polluted groundwater was making its way to the ocean.
The leakage has forced local fishermen to stop offshore test-fishing activities. They were hoping to eventually resume commercial fishing.
Federation chief Kishi told Hirose that the problem of contaminated water has an immeasurable impact on the future of the fishing industry.
The TEPCO president apologized and said the leakage, on top of the groundwater problem, are things that never should have happened.
Hirose said his company will step up patrols at the plant to prevent further oversights, and will replace the current tanks with those that are more resistant to leaks.
The federation chief later said he expects the government to show leadership in dealing with the problem. Kishi said he thinks the utility has failed in its handling of the crisis.
Hirose said TEPCO, with the full support of the government, will swiftly put in place measures to prevent further leaks.
